For the majority of us, summertime and lightning bugs are purely synonymous. There is something about seeing your first lightning bug that ignites a feeling of summer and childhood in us all. These fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, are the true icon of a warm summer night in Georgia and if you know where to find them, then you’re guaranteed to have a truly memorable summer.
One of the greatest aspects of spending the summer in Georgia is being privy to the flashing, bioluminescent insects we know as fireflies.
Night-flying lightning bugs are actually beetles (crazy, right?!) who use the beauty of their blinking lights to ward off predators and to find a mate.
Lightning bugs have organs within the rear of their bodies that produce light, due to two chemicals—luciferase and luciferin, which when combined, generate this light.
But what is really strange and wonderful for Georgians is that Georgia has 56 different species of fireflies, which is the most of any other state in the country.
Unfortunately, for the more light-polluted areas of the state, lightning bugs will not be as abundant, since these bugs use their own light to properly communicate.
