Breweries might not be the first place to come to mind when you think of family friendly destinations in Georgia, but many of them are great spots to bring kids to! While the main draws at breweries is, of course, the beer, many also have great outdoor areas. They’re typically the site of various festivals, concerts, and events, and often host food trucks and even have outdoor games like cornhole. One brewery in Georgia that definitely fits this bill is Terrapin Beer Company in Athens. The beloved spot is tucked away in an industrial area of the quirky college town, and it’s a delightful spot to visit no matter your age.
Terrapin Beer Company opened up in 2002. It's been an incredibly popular Athens spot ever since, appealing to both college students and townies.
In 2016, a majority stake in the company was sold to Molson Coors, meaning it's no longer considered a craft brewery. Even as the brewery expands nationally, it still has a beloved connection to Athens and is heavily involved in the community.
Athens is renowned for its music scene, and fittingly, the brewery was named for a Grateful Dead album, Terrapin Station.
There are recurring cornhole league and trivia nights, plus Cars and Coffee shows. Less common events including an annual chili cook-off in the fall. Several local animal rescue groups host occasional adoption events at the brewery.
Most of the events held at the brewery feature food trucks. You can also bring your own food: there are picnic tables outside, and the beautiful yard is a great place for a picnic.
Reservations are not required for a tour. Note that you do need to wear closed-toed shoes for safety purposes. You can get more information on Terrapin’s website.
There are plenty of other great breweries in Georgia: which one is your favorite? Share yours in the comments!
