St. Catherine’s Island in Georgia is a largely uninhabited, undisturbed barrier island off the coast of the United States.

This beautiful island features nearly 15,000-acres, almost half of which are wetlands, salt marshes, woodlands, and tidal marshes.

The island, which is owned by the Saint Catherines Island Foundation is not open to the public, aside from the beach which is used for educational and scientific purposes.

The island has a fascinating history, as it was inhabited for at least 4000 years, and was the site of the very first Spanish outpost in the state of Georgia.

Today, the island remains much of a natural wonder for many, and aims to promote the conservation of natural resources, as well as the survival of endangered species.

Declared a National Historic Landmark in the 1960s, St. Catherine’s Island is one of the most untouched areas in Georgia’s history.
