The Peach State is a beautiful place, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t home to many allegedly haunted places. There are plenty of urban legends in Georgia, and many of them have to do with Spook Bridge. This “bridge to nowhere” in Georgia is right on the county line between Lowndes and Brooks Counties, not far from Quitman. The dilapidated bridge has not been in use for decades, and it no longer even leads anywhere. The road it was once part of has long since been closed down. Spook Bridge is closed off to visitors, but it’s the source of many rumors and urban legends in the area. It’s said to be the site of several murders and suicides. Many who have trespassed on the bridge claim to have experienced eerie presences or heard unusual sounds. Read on to learn more about this haunted bridge in Georgia, if you dare.
Spook Bridge spans the Withlacoochee River and was once part of Old Quitman Highway.
By the 1950s, the resort had begun to fade in popularity. Flooding washed away parts of Old Quitman Highway. By the 1970s, there was not much need for the bridge anymore, and it was closed to traffic due to being unsafe.
Though people were not technically allowed onto the bridge, it became a popular spot for teenagers to hang out. Graffiti appeared all over the bridge, some of it satanic in nature. It was rumored to be the meeting site of several cults.
It's said to be the site of several suicides. Others claim a husband shoved his wife off the bridge and that you can sometimes hear her screaming from below.
There was even a horror film, "Spook Bridge," filmed here in 2016.
This bridge to nowhere in Georgia may not be long for this world, but it has certainly captured the imagination of those who live nearby.
The legends and rumors about what has happened here in the past are certainly fascinating. Have you heard the stories about Spook Bridge in Georgia? Share your experiences in the comments!
