There are beautiful trails all over Georgia, from our southern tip up to the border with North Carolina and Tennessee. However, North Georgia is considerably more mountainous than the lower half of the state, so it’s not surprising that most of the most popular trails are tucked away up north. Sure, the elevation changes and gorgeous mountain vistas do make for amazing hikes, don’t get us wrong. That doesn’t mean there aren’t great trails in South Georgia that are just as worthy of exploration, though! One of the Peach State’s most underrated parks is the magnificent Crooked River State Park in St. Marys. It may not have mountains or rocky scrambles, but it does have some beautiful scenery, particularly along the Sempervirens Trail.
The trail's unique name is a Latin word meaning "ever-living," which is quite apt with all the old-growth trees you'll see here.
This is a relatively short trail at only about 1.5 miles in length. It's a loop that's honestly more of a nature walk than a hike, but that means it's suitable for kids and novice hikers.
Something about weathered driftwood always sets my imagination going. The beautifully smooth texture speaks volumes as to how many years these trees have seen.
I love North Georgia and the mountains, but seeing the Spanish moss-draped trees of the southern part of our state always makes me miss living down there.
Crooked River State Park may not get all the accolades that some of our more famous parks do, but it's an amazing destination with plenty of wonderful trails.
