When fall comes around each year, many of us start thinking about the best places to go for Christmas in Georgia. There are so many amazing spots to check out each winter, and so much to do! We’ve all got shopping lists to complete, and throw in the desire to check out all the great Christmas festivals in Georgia and our many wonderful light displays and it almost feels like winter in the Peach State just isn’t long enough! We’ve gathered up some of the best Christmas towns in Georgia that we think you’ll want to check out this season:
While Helen is an immensely popular small town to visit in the fall thanks to its lengthy Oktoberfest, it just may be the Christmas capital of Georgia, too! Though its population is under 1,000, there's so, so much to do here. You'll find tons of places to get out and enjoy nature, like nearby Anna Ruby Falls, but the charming downtown Bavarian-themed village is also perfect for shopping and grabbing some local eats. This year's Annual Christmas Parade in Helen is scheduled for Saturday, December 9, 2023 and it's always a blast, so make sure to check it out!
Another great place to go for Christmas in Georgia is Dahlonega. This small town is tucked away in the mountains and looks straight out of a Hallmark movie in the wintertime. The annual Lighting of the Square and Tree takes place on November 24, 2023 and kicks off the Old-Fashioned Christmas in Dahlonega season.
Another town that's quite charming during the holidays is Thomasville. It's got a population of around 18,000 and is one of the largest cities in Southwest Georgia, but it has a great small-town feel that makes it one of our favorite places to go for Christmas in Georgia. There are some great small local shops here to check off all your gifts, and the annual Victorian Christmas Festival is one of the very best Christmas festivals in Georgia. This year's event is scheduled for December 14-15, 2023, and you won't want to miss it!
It's pretty obvious just from the name that the little town of Santa Claus, GA takes winter pretty seriously. This year's tree lighting ceremony takes place on November 16, 2023, and there's even a door decorating contest to see who's got the most festive door in town. People drive from all over to mail letters from here - where else can you get an envelope postmarked as from Santa Claus?! Check out the City of Santa Claus, GA website for the most current details.
Heading to an island to celebrate the holidays may seem a little strange, but Holly Jolly Jekyll is one of the best winter festivals in Georgia. More than 350 lights displays are in the city though November 24, 2023 to January 7, 2024. The Great Tree is absolutely magical, and there are fun light tours to check out all the lights from an open-air trolley. This year's Light Parade is scheduled for December 9, and it's sure to be a blast. Get more information about all the great festive events from the Jekyll Island website.
Ellijay is a charming little town that's one of the best places to go for Christmas in Georgia. There are tons of great winter attractions in this mountain town. This year features a brand new attraction: the Holiday Lights of Ellijay, set up at the Lions Club Fairgrounds. The town's Christmas tree lighting ceremony takes place on December 2, 2023: there's so much to do here! For more information about all of these great Christmas events in Georgia, check out the Gilmer Chamber website.
Another of our favorite places to go for Christmas in Georgia is Blue Ridge. This beautiful mountain town has a small population, but a lot to offer visitors, with delicious restaurants and amazing natural scenery. Light Up Blue Ridge and the town's annual Christmas parade take place just after Thanksgiving and are an excellent way to usher in the holiday season. There's so much to enjoy here during the holidays. Learn more from the Blue Ridge Mountains website.
LaGrange is home to the stunning Hills and Dales Estate, which hosts one of our favorite holiday home tours in Georgia. This Italian-style home is gorgeous when covered in festive decor! If you're looking for more active Christmas events in Georgia, the massive Sweetland Amphitheatre is transformed into Sweetland on Ice, a huge open-air ice rink. Another fun outing in LaGrange is Great Wolf Lodge, an indoor water park that keeps the water at 84 degrees so you can swim even in the dead of winter. Check out the Visit LaGrange website for more information.
