There's Something Incredibly Disturbing Hiding In Plain Sight In This One Georgia Town

Everybody knows that Georgia is home to some pretty terrifying ghost stories. This is why we’re one of the top destinations for ghost tours and haunted houses in the country. Yet, there’s one spot that’s been right underneath our noses this whole time, and many of us walk right on by every day without blinking an eye. We’re talking about the Haunted Pillar in Augusta, Georgia, of course.
There have been quite a few stories that have loaned themselves to the explanation as to why this random, broken down pillar is haunted.
First, it was stated that the Haunted Pillar was all that remained of a farmer’s market that once stood at Fifth and Broad Streets in downtown Augusta, Georgia. The market stood from 1830 until February 7, 1878, when it was destroyed in a tornado. According to local legend, any attempt to move or destroy the pillar, or even touch it, would result in immediate death.
The next story involved a preacher who was denied the right to preach on the corner of the street. The preacher threatened that a great wind would destroy the city except for one pillar and that whoever tried to remove the remaining pillar would be struck dead. Soon, a tornado blew through the town destroying everything but the single pillar. Nobody every tried to move or rebuild the pillar for fear that the curse would ruin their lives.
Up until the late 1950s, stories of Augusta highway workers who were struck by thunderbolts or crushed by their machinery when they tried to move the pillar were just gossip or hearsay. But it was said that the pillar’s power had only grown with time. Some accounts now say that the pillar will kill anyone who touches it. It even looks like a menacing structure, with a chipped exterior and cement-stained with age.
Some people don’t buy that the pillar is cursed. They walk by it each and every day and don’t see what the fuss is about. Yet, others take the pillar seriously, and make sure to stay as far away as possible.
