9 Fantastic Family Events Around Athens, Georgia To Add To Your Summer Bucket List

Monroe will host the "Movies at the Mill" event on July 29th this year. This summer celebration is an all day affair, complete with food trucks, live music, a fun zone for the kids, and, of course, an excellent movie for all to enjoy. Lunch at the food trucks will be available from 11am-2pm, and the festivities for movie night will begin at 6:30pm. This year's movie: Star Wars. May the force be with you.

Whether you want a throwback to your childhood or just looking to introduce the kids to 'The Goonies,' head over Town Park in Madison on July 7th to catch this favorite film playing for free! Grab your friends, grab your family, and don't forget a picnic blanket and snacks.

The city of Rutledge puts on a summer concert series every Friday from 7pm-9pm. These concerts take place all summer long, and are free and tons of fun!

5. Crooked Pines Farm will be hosting its annual Ice Cream Festival on July 16th from 10am-4pm. The admission cost is only $5 per person!

Festivities will include a homemade ice cream contest, ice cream samples, a beauty pageant to crown the Ice Cream Queen, a popsicle stick sculpture contest, and much more!

Madison will be hosting it's annual Firefly Festival on July 29-30. July 29th will be the Friday Frolic, a family-friendly event that is $5 per child and is free for adults. All activities at this event are included in the cost of admission, including face painting, bubbles, inflatables, stilt walkers, live music, crafts, and icy treats for guests.

On day two of the Firefly Festival, Madison puts on "Date Night." While this might sound like an adults-only event, kids are welcome to come and join in on the fun! The concert begins at 7:30pm and costs $10 per person (children under 12 are free). Food is not sold during this event, but visitors are welcome to bring food or enjoy take-out from one of Madison's surrounding restaurants.

Stop by Bear Hollow Zoo in Memorial Park any Saturday from 1pm-4pm to check out the exhibit hall. This cool little Athens animal park lets children can see and touch live animals!

On July 19th, the State Botanical Gardens of Georgia offers a full moon hike for $5 per person or $15 per family.

This 2-mile hike leads you through the gardens and along a wooded trail and takes place from 8pm-9:30pm.

Zoo Atlanta offers Adventure Clubs throughout the summer. Panda Playtime is just for toddlers (ages 3-4) on July 6th, 9th, and 16th from 10am-11am. Advanced registration is required, and the cost for the toddler event includes zoo admission as well.

Did you know you can get a free family zoo pass with your library card? The library offers one free pass per year, and it covers up to four people. Stop by your local library for details, and spend a free day with the animals!

Georgia Theatre Company locations offer family-friendly movies on Tuesday and Thursday mornings all through July at 10am. Admission is $1.50, and popcorn and drinks can be purchased for $1.50 on these family movie days.

Hard Labor Creek State Park in Rutledge offers a moonlit guided kayak tour every month! The tours are held on the Friday and Saturday during the week of the full moon and last about two hours. This is a great activity for families with teenagers or adult children too! The tour provides the kayak, life vest, and paddle.

There is a $5 parking fee and the trip costs $15. This event requires registration in advance, so don’t wait until the last minute to book your adventure!
