When you initially hear about islands in Georgia, your thoughts will likely turn to places like Tybee, St. Simons, Jekyll, and Cumberland. But what if there was another island that you were missing entirely? One that has 26,000-acres of pure natural beauty, and 13 miles of pristine coastline? The only catch though is that you’ll need a different mode of transportation than what you’re used to…
Ossabaw Island in Georgia is one of the sea islands that often gets overlooked when people are planning their vacations around the state.
As the third largest barrier island in Georgia, around 20-miles from Savannah, Ossabaw Island is one of those places that many don’t even realize has public access opportunities.
While the island is mostly known for being environmentally protected due to its ecological importance, there are still 13 miles of breathtaking beaches, plus plenty of adventures that visitors can take.
But, the first thing you need to realize is that Ossabaw Island is only accessible by boat, so don’t think you can hoof it there or hop in the car and ride.
As long as you’re mindful of your surroundings and the importance this island holds in terms of nature and preservation, then you can enjoy the beautiful beaches all year long.
