When it comes to living in Georgia, there’s many home traditions and quirks about our state that are near and dear to our hearts. Drinking Coke over Pepsi and going to Home Depot instead of Lowe’s are things that only people living in Georgia can understand. Here are 15 ways to know that you’re from the Peach State. If you find these to be relatable things about Georgia, you are either from here or have been here long enough to become one of us!
We also like saying where you goin', fixin' to, and any other abbreviated words and phrases. Our southern accent is what gives us Georgia residents away!
The phrases "I'm going to Athens this weekend" and "I'm getting wasted this weekend" are synonymous. If you attended college in Georgia, you've almost definitely frequented this scene at least once. Even if you don't remember it.
People in Georgia think its just plain rude to not smile or say hello to a stranger on the street. Waving at a stranger while driving your car down the road is total normal, right?
5. It takes at least 30 minutes to drive anywhere in Georgia.
Atlanta, Georgia is known for some of the worst traffic in the country, and with all of the sprawling suburbs, a car is essential to living here. Read: You need a car to go just about anywhere in Georgia!
6. You expect for it to snow one day and be 80 degrees the next.
Georgia is home to some of the strangest weather in the country! These two children wore shorts and flip flops the next day - true story! We never really pack up our seasonal clothes, because you never know when you'll need them again.
7. Your favorite basketball team is the Atlanta Hawks.
You ate Checkers and Krystal's instead of White Castle and Rally's. You don't know what a Jack in the Box is nor do you really care! Waffle House is good enough for you!

9. You tell non-Georgia people you're from Atlanta when in actuality you live, like, 45 miles outside of the city proper.
If you ever give a Georgia person unsweetened tea, they'll surely snub their noses at it. Sweet tea is our specialty, and we can definitely tell when a non-Georgia person makes it. It's just not quite as sweet as ours!
12. Grits is an appropriate side dish to any meal.
Here in Georgia, we're spoiled by the spacious houses and apartments we get for such cheap prices. We just can't understand why people out west or up north would pay so much for such little living spaces. The cost of living in Georgia is so much less than most other areas of the country!
