There’s nothing better than a road trip, especially when school’s out and the whole family is bored and looking for a fun way to spend the weekend. It can be hard to find a place everyone can enjoy, but we think we have the perfect weekend road trip for almost anyone. Of course, some folks will have a longer drive than others, but we think this trip packs enough fun into a weekend that it’s worth the drive.
Pack up the car and pull the kids away from their computers and video games. We're going on a trip to a charming town of Lake Wales. This Central Florida town is packed with Florida landmarks, outdoor activities, great restaurants, and family-friendly adventures.
Start out early on Saturday morning, so that you can reach Bok Tower Gardens, our first stop, in time to beat the heat. It opens at 8:00 a.m. This famous Florida landmark features a 200-foot "singing" tower surrounded by lush gardens.
Don't forget to check out the Pinewood Estate, a beautiful historic home located within the gardens. If you get hungry, you can grab lunch at the on-site restaurant, The Blue Palmetto Cafe.
After lunch, you can spend some more time in the gardens or head over to our next stop, Spook Hill. Park your car at the bottom of the hill and put it in neutral. Then watch in amazement as it seems to roll backward up the hill, all on its own. Is it supernatural or just an optical illusion? We'll let you decide.
Now it's time to check out where you'll be staying. Of course, we're not going to have you stay at some boring old hotel. You'll be staying at the incredible Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo, a unique property that combines luxury cabins and glamping experiences with Western-themed activities.
It's a well-known fact that this is where you'll find the best breakfast in town. The large portions of delicous home-cooked classics will satisfy any hunger.
What's more Florida than orange juice? Our next stop on Sunday is Florida's Natural Visitor Center, which recalls a time when this part of Florida was covered in beautiful orange groves. Learn all about the history of the citrus industry in Florida and pick out some unique gifts and souvenirs.
Next, we'll head over to Fiddlers Ridge Farms & Winery to sample some hand-crafted wines made completely with ingredients fresh from the Sunshine State. You'll be able to sample wines you've probably never tried before, including blueberry and honey varieties.
You can pick and choose as many activities as you like on the ranch to fill in the rest of the day, and you will definitely not run out of things to do. There are so many unique and fascinating things to do and see on this trip, it’s guaranteed to be an unforgettable weekend.
Have you ever visited Lake Wales? What destinations would you add to your perfect Florida weekend road trip?
