When I hear of a natural trail near Sarasota, Florida, my mind immediately goes to Myakka River State Park. Walking that massive canopy bridge is one of my favorite hikes in the state! But there is another secret trail in Sarasota that deserves some attention – the Deer Prairie Creek Loop in Deer Prairie Creek Preserve. This preserve is named after the tributary of the Myakka River that flows right through the property! This expansive preserve spans approximately 6,400 acres, making it one of the largest natural areas in the county. It offers various ecosystems and outdoor activities for nature enthusiasts and hikers.
Clocking in at around seven miles total, Deer Prairie Creek Loop is a hidden trail that meanders through some beautiful pockets of Florida wildlife.
The hike has been rated moderately-challenging, not because of any extreme elevation changes, but because of the length and natural surface trails that may be uneven in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
The preserve is home to a wide range of wildlife, and while hiking the Deer Prairie Creek Loop, you may have the opportunity to spot some of Florida's native animals.
Keep an eye out for white-tailed deer, gopher tortoises, and various bird species. Birdwatchers often find the preserve to be a haven for spotting feathered friends. Meanwhile, you might just spot a roaming wild boar or two!
Depending on the time of year, you might experience variations in the landscape and wildlife. Be prepared for different flora and fauna throughout the seasons.
As with any outdoor adventure, it's important to practice responsible hiking. Make sure to pack essentials like water, sunscreen, insect repellent, and leave no trace by carrying out all trash.
