When most people think of Florida, they think of the touristy side: beaches, theme parks, and nightlife. If you want to find the authentic side of Florida, this upcoming festival is the perfect place to start.
Most Floridians know by now that our state has a reputation for being a little quirky. Come visit this little town east of Fort Myers on February 25th & 26th to get a taste of authentic Florida.
This small-town festival celebrates Florida's quirky charm in a fun and positive way, so it's a great way to experience the Old Florida that's getting harder and harder to find.
The Swamp Cabbage Festival has been celebrated in LaBelle for over 50 years.
On the one hand, it's a typical small-town festival with a parade, beauty pageants, delicious homemade food, and fun activities.
Look a little closer, however, and you'll see that this is a festival that could only be found in Florida.
First of all, the swamp cabbage (or hearts of palm) is a delicacy sourced from the sabal palm, Florida's state tree. It can be pretty pricey if you find it on a fancy menu.
Besides all of the usual things, at this festival, you can watch armadillo races, join in a fishing tournament, attend a rodeo, buy unique gifts and crafts, check out a car show, and enjoy live music and performances.
You can even try tasty Florida foods like swamp cabbage fritters and gator tail.
Tens of thousands of people show up every year to this free festival at Barron Park, on the Caloosahatchee River.
It's a weekend full of fun, traditions, entertainment, and food that you'll only find in Florida.
This free festival is held February 25th & 26th at Barron Park in LaBelle, Florida. Address: 25 E Hickpochee Ave, LaBelle, FL 33935.
We think every Floridian should experience the Swamp Cabbage Festival at least once in their lives. What do you think?
