Five are reported dead and eight more have been injured at Fort Lauderdale’s Hollywood-International Airport approximately 30 minutes north of Miami after a lone gunman opened fire on Friday afternoon.
Officials report the shooter has been identified as Esteban Santiago, 26, born in New Jersey.
Santiago reportedly departed a flight from Canada bound for Fort Lauderdale. He had arrived Friday afternoon.
The gunman then proceeded to the baggage claim area on a lower floor in Terminal 2 to pick up his bags.
After claiming his luggage, Santiago opened fire, randomly selecting targets and even reloading his gun at least one time. The gunman didn't stop until he ran out of bullets.
Federal guidelines allow certain unloaded weapons to be checked in a locked case. They also allow the ammunition to be checked in baggage.
Officials apprehended Santiago without any issues.
Some reports say after Santiago ran out of ammunition he simply laid down in the floor and waited for officials to arrive. No motives for the shooting have been released.
