There is a historic building in Tampa that was given a second chance to shine recently. Pickford’s Counter in Florida was once Pickford’s Sundries, and while much of the old-school Americana vibe has remained, it now has a more modern twist. Enjoy familiar flavors of the lunch counter you once fell in love with (milkshakes, anyone?) plus unique home goods that you won’t find elsewhere.
Pickford’s Counter in Tampa is a retro-style luncheonette that pays homage to a slice of the city’s history.
In the 1950s, Pickford’s Sundries was the place to be, whether you were looking for pancakes, milkshakes, egg creams, or grilled cheese. Coincidentally enough, it was also the place to buy a greeting card, a toothbrush, and even play a few records on the jukebox.
Fast-forward over a half-century later and the pink art deco building has gotten a refresh thanks to Urban Bungalow, a home essentials gift shop, and Pickford’s Counter, a breakfast and lunch place.
When pairing these two businesses you get the perfect amalgam of things that once made Pickford’s Sundries so special. This is where modern and retro home goods and old-school counter-serve meals collide.
Of course, you’ll find those same delicious milkshakes but elevated with different flavors. You’ll also be able to snag a few Chicago-style hot dogs, which sound simple enough, but they are made from ground top round and brisket and then topped with all different types of yumminess.
