Florida draws tons of tourists to its theme parks and beaches, but we think the best way to experience Florida is by visiting its small towns. Here you’ll see much more of authentic Florida’s history and nature, without the crowds. Some of the best shops and restaurants are hiding in small towns, too. One of the best towns in Florida that is often overlooked is DeLand.
This historic city has about 28,000 residents, but it still feels like a small town. It is conveniently located between Orlando and Daytona, and near many of Florida's best springs.
Deland has a surprising variety of shops and restaurants. There are many lovingly restored historic buildings for architecture and history buffs, too.
The Athens Theatre, located in the heart of downtown DeLand, is the perfect place to catch a show. The charming Italian Renaissance style theater was built in 1921.
The Stetson Mansion, a popular attraction for visitors and locals, is considered Florida's first luxury home.
DeLand offers plenty of ways to experience Florida's natural beauty. Book a ride with Blue Heron River Tours for a two-hour scenic tour of the St. Johns River, narrated by a knowledgeable guide.
Highland Park Fish Camp is full of rustic charm that will take you back to Old Florida. Rent a boat, take a fishing charter, or stay for a while in a cabin or your own tent or RV.
DeLand has a wide variety of restaurants, featuring cuisine from all over the world. One of the most popular hot spots is Santorini's Greek Cuisine.
Santorini's serves up all of your favorite Greek dishes, from spanakopita to gyros, along with some incredible specialty dishes. It can get pretty busy, but it's worth the wait.
For coffee or a quick bite, stop by Boston Coffeehouse.
This cozy little cafe is the perfect spot to linger over a latte or a tasty sandwich. If you have a sweet tooth, there are plenty of specialty coffee drinks and bakery treats, too.
Have you ever been to DeLand? What are your favorite things to do there? What’s your favorite overlooked town in Florida?
