We know that not all beaches are created equal, but there’s really no wrong way to have a fun beach day. Sometimes it’s nice to be only a block away from shops and restaurants or even your hotel. But some people prefer their beaches as natural as possible, which can be hard to find. We’ll give you the scoop on one of our favorite natural beach that feels like a private island (almost, anyway).
The gorgeous natural beach you see here is part of Shell Island near Panama City Beach in Northwest Florida. This seven-mile-long barrier island is a rare and unspoiled gem, completely undeveloped.
On the Gulf side of the island, the sand is pristine and white, and the water is the most beautiful clear emerald tone that this part of Florida is famous for.
The island is completely natural, with no bathrooms or concession stands, picnic tables, or even trash cans (so you have to take it all back with you).
Although this means you will have to bring your own food and supplies, it also means that you can find some unique shells and even see rare and endangered wildlife you would never see on a crowded developed beach.
You can also explore the bay side of the island, which has forests filled with native wildlife and even a scenic inland lake.
The only way to reach Shell Island is to either take the shuttle from St. Andrews State Park on Panama City Beach, the ferry at Capt. Anderson's Marina, or to rent your own pontoon boat.
Have you ever visited this gorgeous natural beach? What’s your favorite place to see wild Florida in its natural state?
