You probably didn’t expect Florida to have a possum-themed festival yearly in the panhandle. Or, maybe you did. I feel like Florida is full of surprises, which is what keeps me on my toes. The small town of Wausau outside of Tallahassee hosts a possum-themed festival every year and has been doing so for over 50 years. Created in 1970 by Dalton Carter, the Wausau Possum Festival takes place the first weekend in August. This year that means you need to mark your calendars for Friday & Saturday, August 4-5, 2023, and get ready to participate in all the possum fun.
The annual Wausau Possum Festival is a beloved tradition that graces the quaint village of Northwest Florida, home to a close-knit community of 400 people.
The festival's allure extends far beyond the village's borders, attracting a staggering number of up to 10,000 enthusiastic possum-loving attendees each year. Even prominent figures, like former Florida Governor Rick Scott, have joined in the festivities, adding a touch of grandeur to the affair.
The festival commences with a delightful pancake breakfast, fueling participants for the much-anticipated "Possum Trot," a fun 5k run (thankfully, meant for people, not possums!).
An essential highlight of the festival is the "Possum Auction," where the adorable possums that play a part in the festivities are bid farewell and released back into the wild, ensuring their well-being and safety.
The festival organizers are meticulous in their commitment to treating these creatures with care and respect, ensuring that no possums are ever harmed or abused during the event.
Other events throughout the festival include a lively square dance, a cross-cut sawing contest, sack races, greasy pole climbing, and much more.
Plus, get ready for a true highlight of the festival - the "Miss Possum Day" beauty pageant! The crowned "Miss Possum Day" becomes a symbolic figurehead of the event, adding an extra touch of fun to the day's festivities.
The Wausau Possum Festival, steeped in tradition and brimming with wholesome fun, remains a cherished event that bridges communities and spreads joy to all who attend.
