I’m not the type to go out looking for ghosts, but I’m sure some of you out there are. Or maybe, like me, you’d just like to know what roads to avoid. Either way, here are a few local legends, just in time for Halloween.
1. I-4, Seminole County
Legend has it this highway's approach to the St. Johns River Bridge was built over the graves of four German immigrants who died of yellow fever. This area has supposedly had an unusually high number of accidents as well as two hurricanes that seemed to follow its path.
2. Orange Avenue Bridge/Veterans Memorial Bridge, Daytona Beach
A woman in a robe or long coat has been seen on the approach on the northeast side of this bridge. There have also reportedly been objects thrown around when there were no high winds or other obvious causes. The most popular theory is that she was a young woman walking to her homecoming dance who was struck by a car on the bridge. Drivers have reported picking up a woman in a cloak to drive her across the bridge, only for her to vanish when they reach the other side.
3. Orange Blossom Trail, Apopka
People have reportedly seen a Native American warrior crossing the road here before looking directly at them, then vanishing.
4. Gobbler Road, Astor
This road goes through a group of mobile homes called the Astor Campsites. There have been reports of people seeing a glowing white man, possibly walking a dog. Of course, if you plan to venture through a private area, be sure to get permission from locals and proceed with caution.
5. Tiger Trail, Dunnellon
Tiger Trail, or SW 180th Avenue, is somewhat famous as part of the location for the 2001 film Jeepers Creepers. Legend has it that the ghosts of three children will appear at 3am at the spot where this road passes a local high school.
6. Rolling Acres Road, Lady Lake
Traveling this road west from Highway 441, there's a remote stretch of road with many hills. There have been several reports of strange noises form the woods and a woman in white. Some people claim her name was Julie or Julia and that she was killed by a jealous lover.
