Living in Florida is a unique experience. Our state is a huge melting pot of all kinds of people, both native Floridians and transplants, set in a unique environment, with weather and wildlife that’s different from the rest of the country. So it shouldn’t be surprising that Floridians do a few things that might seem strange to folks in the rest of the country (but perfectly normal to us). Here are a few of the “weird” things Floridians do:
1. We coexist with gators, bugs, snakes, and sharks like it's no big deal.
That's the price of living in paradise.
2. We'll walk casually through rain without an umbrella.
Random showers are just a part of life here in the Sunshine State. You can't predict them, and they don't usually last long. So why bother with an umbrella?
3. We'll wear flip-flops year-round.
And pretty much everywhere, on any occasion.
4. We're pretty nonchalant about hurricanes.
There's a whole hurricane season here (and it lasts about half of the year). Sometimes, we even have hurricane parties.
5. We're obsessed with a grocery store.
Even if you don't always shop exclusively at Publix, you have to admit Pub subs are the best.
6. We have annual passes to Disney World.
Okay, not everyone does, but you probably know at least a few people who are either going to or just came back from Disney World every time you talk to them.
7. On New Years Eve, we drop a giant shoe with Sushi in it. (Sushi is a drag queen).
Key West has plenty of other unique traditions, too.
8. We dress up like pirates on days other than Halloween.
It's a way for us to celebrate our history ... and an excuse to party like pirates.
9. We'll break out a sweater when it hits 60 degrees.
Hey, we like to stay warm. That's why we live in Florida.
10. We make Key Lime everything.
It doesn't stop at chocolate-covered Key lime pie on a stick. There's Key lime Ice cream, cake, shakes, doughnuts, salsa, jelly, soaps, lotions, and everything else you can imagine.
11. Christmas here is a little bit different.
We deck the palms, wear shorts on Christmas, and our snowmen are made of sand.
12. We practically come out of the womb knowing how to swim.
Floridians are a semiaquatic species.
What do you think? What are some other things Floridians do that seem weird to everyone else?
