Whether you’re a lifelong Floridian or you’re planning your first visit, you may not have heard of some of the best places in Florida. These little towns are often overshadowed by the theme parks and beaches that our state is famous for, but we think small towns like these are actually the Sunshine State’s best attractions. Why not see how many of these you can visit in 2017?
1. Apalachicola
You've probably heard of this small town in Northwest Florida from the menu at your favorite seafood restaurant. This rustic fishing town is famous for its oysters, but you'll also love the Old Florida feel.
2. Mount Dora
Mount Dora has so much to offer, you can visit any time of year and have a good time. Locally famous for its antiques, parks, boat tours, and train rides, you'll never run out of things to do here.
3. St. Augustine
There are a million reasons to visit St. Augustine, one of them being that it's our nation's oldest city. Beside all of the incredible history and architecture, there's also lots of food, art, music, and shopping to explore here.
4. Tarpon Springs
Tarpon Springs is so unique, you'll feel like a world traveler when you visit here. Home to the largest percentage of Greek-American residents in the country, you can expect authentic, delicious food and plenty of new experiences.
5. Gulfport
The slogan of this town near St. Petersburg is "Keep Gulfport Weird, " and it shows in the colorful buildings and public art that cover the town. There are plenty of restaurants and shops to keep you busy for days.
6. Fernandina Beach
Fernandina Beach always tops our lists of romantic getaways. This historic town on Amelia Island is home to Fort Clinch as well as the oldest running saloon in the state. There are plenty of boutiques and restaurants, and some incredibly charming B&Bs.
7. Dade City
Dade City was our choice for the "One Florida Town That's So Perfectly Southern." We love the Pioneer Florida Museum & Village and the town's obsession with all things kumquat.
8. High Springs
It's hard not to fall in love with this adorable little town in Alachua County. Here, you'll find stunning natural attractions, excellent restaurants, and lots of antiques to bring home.
9. Winter Garden
We dare you to pass through Winter Garden without stopping, at least for a little while. Although it's bigger than the rest of the towns on this list, it has retained its small-town vibe, with a wonderful historic downtown.
10. Chipley
Chipley was chosen as our favorite town to visit for an autumn day trip, and with good reason. Check out the article to see some stunning fall colors you might not have known existed in the Sunshine State.
11. Trenton
Trenton is the tiniest town on the list, with only 2,000 residents. Nonetheless, there's plenty of personality in this little town. Here, you can find an old-school soda fountain, tea room, and a world-class quilt festival.
Have you visited any of these charming Florida towns? Which one is your favorite? Are there any others you think we missed?
