A lot of people think Florida should be in the running for worst drivers in the country, and even residents tend to agree. We usually blame it on snowbirds, elderly people who can no longer read street signs or tourists who have no idea where they’re going. It’s so bad that we have super high insurance costs (the fourth highest in the country), and we begrudgingly accept it. But according to the annual ranking on carinsurnacecomparison.com, Florida is nowhere near the fourth worst state for drivers. It’s actually all the way down at #32 in the nation.
You may be surprised to learn that Florida scored well for both drunk driving and speeding, which probably helped improve its ranking over the past few years. Florida, did, however score the worst for "careless driving," which is defined by pedestrian and cyclist deaths. Keep that in mind next time you head out for an evening stroll.
Still, it seems like the #32 state shouldn't have to pay the fourth-highest insurance rates, right? I know I have to pay a lot, even though I've never done anything to raise my rates. Well, careless driving in general leads to auto insurance claims, even when crashes aren't fatal. And that's a large part of how insurance companies decide what to charge. Oh, and in case you were wondering, the states with the worst drivers were Montana first, South Carolina and New Mexico tied for second and third, and Texas coming in fourth. I wonder what those states pay for car insurance.
