Most people don’t think of rock formations when they think of Florida. However, if they knew about Florida Caverns State Park in the Florida Panhandle near Marianna, Florida, rock formations would certainly be near the top of their list. Florida Caverns State Park is an underground cave system that is filled with stalagmites, stalactites, and flowstones that are absolutely incredible.
These caves are simply incredible. While there are many activities at Florida Caverns State Park including bicycling, boating, camping, and geo-seeking, we highly recommend going on a cave tour to see these natural wonders.
These caves were opened to the public in the 1930's after the Civilian Conservation Corps conducted work to make the caves tall enough to stand up in. This work allowed cave tours to begin to share this wonder with the public.
The inside of the cave is 65 degrees year round. Be sure to bring a jacket. Inside the cave, you may get lucky and experience one of the light shows that lights up these rock formations in ways you have never seen before.
Many special plants and animals have adapted to live in these limestone caves. Bats, crayfish, and salamanders are among some of the unique animals that have chosen these caves as their homes.
After your cave tour, be sure to stick around to explore the rest of the state park. With plenty of fun activities and incredible views, you can easily spend the whole day here!
These Florida Caverns are unlike any you’ve ever seen before. Whether seeking out exciting rock formations is one of your pastimes, or whether you just heard about these caves and can’t wait to visit, Florida Caverns State Park will not disappoint.
