A Florida Seafood Restaurant, Instead Of Cooking This Giant Lobster, Did Something Amazing.
Time was almost up for a 110-year-old lobster. Older than the county whose restaurant was about to serve it, this Maine lobster weighed in at nearly 15 pounds. In a narrow escape, Larry the Lobster was carried out of the Tin Fish in Sunrise, Florida. Luckily he was escorted out alive and well and not in a take-out bag. Here’s more about the heartwarming sequence of events that saved Larry from figurative and literal hot water:

There's no doubt about it: this massive lobster fresh from Maine looked good enough to eat. Joe Melluso, owner of the Tin Fish seafood chain in South Florida, noticed this immediately. Melluso claimed a lobster of this size to be one in a million, which is what inspired him to take these photographs.

The chef felt a bit guilty about the prospect of serving up such an old creature, but decided that if he didn’t serve it in his restaurant, someone else would. He couldn’t have predicted the response that his pictures would generate.

A group of local business owners assembled together and offered to pay $300 for Larry’s freedom. The chef found the offer a bit ridiculous at first, but then emotion got the best of him. His true passion for preparing seafood was ultimately outweighed by the dedication of these individuals to protect such the impressive species.

In a moment of triumph, Larry was safely carried out of the restaurant on Wednesday. He can now enjoy his golden years at the Maine State Aquarium and won’t have to worry about another capture. Or ending up on someone’s platter.
