One of the greatest natural spaces you’ll find in the Jacksonville area is the Jessie Ball DuPont Park.
Nestled in the Jessie Ball DuPont Park is a 250-year-old tree dubbed The Treaty Oak, clocking in at over 70 feet in height, with massive outstretched branches in every direction.
Back in the early 1900s, this tree was known as being the biggest live oak in the state! This was around the time when the park was an amusement park called Dixieland Park
In the 1930s, the Garden Club, helmed by Mrs. Jessie DuPont and newspaper reporter, Pat Moran, chose to preserve the tree. Moran is credited with naming it Treaty Oak, after writing a fictional piece about how settlers and indigenous people met under the tree to sign peace treaties.
