Entering This Little Known Florida Castle Will Make You Feel Like You’re In A Fairytale
The Villa Zorayda was built in 1883 by Bostonian millionaire and amateur architect Franklin W. Smith as his winter home in St. Augustine. It was designed to resemble a 12th-century Moorish palace, and it is the first example of the Moorish Revival style used for a residence in Florida. Smith was a pioneer of a poured concrete style later used by Henry M. Flagler for his iconic St. Augustine resorts. In its more than 130 years of existence, the castle has served as everything from a speakeasy to a movie set. Today, it serves as a museum, filled with art and antiques, offering daily tours and self-guided audio tours.

Villa Zorayda was closed for several years in the 2000s to undergo extensive renovation. It is truly an impressive sight.

Villa Zorayda was designed to replicate a portion of the enchanting Alhambra Palace, located in Granada, Spain.

From the moment you walk in, you will notice the luxurious touch and attention to detail throughout the castle.

One of the most stunning features are the horseshoe arches on both levels.

There are many small details that are gorgeous, too, like this stunning piece of statuary from the main hall.

The Museum contains many exotic and luxurious works of art and antiques that belonged to the previous owners of Villa Zorayda.

The home is full of all kinds of ornate pieces, including Oriental rugs and antique brass lamps throughout the home. Don't miss the ancient Egyptian "cat rug," which is over 2,400 years old.

The colorful "Harem Room" was originally a porch with a "harem window," a feature that allows occupants to see out without letting passerby see inside.

In keeping with St. Augustine's Nights of Lights tradition, Villa Zorayda holds candlelit tours around the holidays. Isn't it absolutely gorgeous?
