Delaware is full of hidden treasures, and in a state that’s super tiny, it is always impressive to find something new. One little park in the quaint town of Lewes can be called one of Delaware’s best kept secrets, because so few realize all that it is hiding!
You'll find Zwaanendael Park on the corner of Savannah Road and Kings Highway in the charming town of Lewes.
This beautiful spot is home to the Zwaanendael Museum, Century Fisher-Martin House, a gorgeous central fountain, and one of the most unique gardens in the entire state.
The Zwaanendael Museum celebrates Lewes' history as the First Town in the First State, and tells the story of the original Dutch settlers.
You'll also find displays about the Delmarva Native American tribes, the mariners who lived and worked here, and the back-and-forth history of the city itself. There's even a petrified mermaid inside! Without a doubt, it's one of the most unique spots in Delaware.

In the springtime, Zwaanendael Park comes alive with tulips and other gorgeous flowers.
Throughout the summer and fall, Lewes in Bloom works to make sure Zwaanendael Park is a top destination for anyone looking to enjoy gorgeous landscaping, intriguing history, and a place to relax.
One of the defining features of the park is the incredible Fisher-Martin Herb Garden.
When you step into the garden, you'll be taking a step back in time. It's an authentic 1700s-era garden. It's been planted with herbs used by Colonial housewives ad Native Americans of the Cape Henlopen region. It was originally planted in 1984 after years of research. You may also notice the The willow fence and arbors - which represent the fencing that colonists used when settling the region.
The Century Fisher-Martin House is now home to the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Center, so be sure to stop by.
Inside, you'll find all sorts of information to make your Lewes getaway a trip you'll always remember. You can learn more about the history of the region, the current happenings in town, and they'll even recommend a restaurant or two for your stay.
Take a day to explore Zwaanendael Park, the museum, and the garden this fall. You’ll be amazed by the stories you find and the scenery that you uncover, just a few blocks from busy downtown Lewes.
