There’s a lot to love about the First State, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have our faults. Here are 9 things that bring out the worst of Delaware – see how many you try to avoid regularly.
1. Main Street Grottos On Weekend Nights
This landmark floods with frat boys and rowdy UD Students on the weekends from August through May, and it's just not worth it. Grab your pizza earlier in the day, or head to a smaller, quieter place for your pie.
2. Rip Tides
It should go without saying that when rip tide warnings are out, you should avoid the ocean. Still, every time the current is too strong for safety, I see dozens of swimmers and surfers risking their lives to play in the water. It is not worth your safety! Every year, people are killed when the ocean becomes too much for them. Learn how to spot a riptide, follow life guards' orders, and learn how to swim out of a rip tide if you are caught in the undertow.
3. South and Central Wilmington
Wilmington is a small city with plenty of dangerous neighborhoods. There is a lot of work that needs to be done to clean up this city and make it safer for residents, but in the meantime, stick to Trolley Square, Rodney Square, and the Riverfront if you visit our largest city.
4. Ocean City, Maryland
Sorry, OCMD - but you can keep your 'Seacrets' to yourself! Sure, it's a great resort town, but why head south when you've got Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, Rehoboth Beach, Fenwick Island and Lewes? We'll stay in Delaware, thanks!
5. Beach Traffic
If you must drive south on a Friday afternoon in the summer, be prepared for a long haul. Beach traffic gets really bad here, and there aren't many ways to avoid it. Try leaving very early in the morning, or heading down late at night for your best chance to avoid a bumper-to-bumper mess.
6. Questionable Scrapple
By its very nature, scrapple is already kind of questionable. If you insist on eating this strange, local breakfast meat, be sure you're eating the quality stuff, and be sure it's cooked properly!
7. Out of State Seafood
Maryland gets a pass here - after all, they do serve up incredible crabcakes. Delaware's crabcakes can be just as good, and a good Delaware oyster is the best in the country. Seafood in other states, with few exceptions, just doesn't cut it.
8. Christiana Mall - in December
If you live in Delaware, you better get your holiday shopping done early. The Christiana Mall is nearly unrecognizable in December, when floods of out-of-staters flock to our shopping malls to pick up tax-free goods. The lines are long, parking is impossible, and it's just a headache that can be easily avoided... by shopping earlier.
9. Calling it "Lower Slower."
Sorry, bumper stickers. It's not LSD and it's never been LSD! Slower Lower is what it's called - and it starts at the canal.
