Delaware’s state parks are an underrated gem of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. While most think of our neighbor states and their mountains, hills, and lakes as excellent getaways for nature lovers, here in the First State, we’ve got a few wonders of our own! If you’re looking for an easy-to-plan and truly enjoyable fall camping getaway, head to Trap Pond State Park in Laurel.
Trap Pond is a beautiful place to spend a few nights when the weather cools off and the leaves start to change.
The park's signature Bald Cypress trees begin to turn beautiful hues of orange, red, and yellow in October, and hold on to their color into the beginning of November.
The campground at Trap Pond State Park is open year-round, which makes it the perfect place for a getaway in Delaware no matter what time of year you want to head out.
We think that fall is the best time to stay in the park. There are fewer crowds, the weather is cooler and less humid, and the scenery is hard to beat!
... or head out on the pond itself in a kayak or canoe. On a nice day, there's no better way to enjoy the fresh air and see all of the aquatic wildlife that calls this place home.
Perhaps the best part of a fall getaway at Trap Pond State Park, though, is stepping out of your tent or camper to see a sky full of stars. Without light pollution from the beach towns, it's one of the darkest sky sites in Delaware!

While you’re heading south, don’t forget to stop and pick up apple cider donuts from Fifer Orchards! They’ll make for the best camp breakfast you’ve ever had.
