One of my favorite parts about writing for Only In Delaware is discovering the best traits of each town in our state. Before I began to look at Delaware with these articles in mind, I would go about my day and do my usual in each town I visited, rarely stopping to check out the hidden sites and hole-in-the-wall restaurants. That led to a serious under-appreciation of our greatest towns! So, to make up for it, I’ll stop you from wasting your Delaware life in the same fashion: make sure you visit these 7 towns in 2017.
Lewes may be the most charming town in Delaware! With history as old as the state itself shown off in museums and historic places, there's never a lack of things to do. Cape Henlopen State Park is part of the town, and you can explore the abandoned military fort hidden deep in the pine tree forest.
Must Do: Climb the Observation Tower at Cape Henlopen
Bowers Beach is a tiny, quiet fishing town in Delaware. Life here is uncomplicated and most residents make their living on the water. The beaches are gorgeous and you can spend all day watching the tide go in and out.
Must Do: Fish with the pros on a chartered expedition.
Delmar is a border town that sits partially in Maryland and partially in Delaware... if you couldn't tell by the name. The history of this tiny town is so interesting - it popped up as a way to take advantage of a loophole in railroad law, burned to the ground twice, was rebuilt and flourished. Now it's a place to see historic markers and grab delicious crabs.
Must Do: Pose with the giant crab in front of Old Mill Crab House.
Frederica is a little town in Delaware with fewer than 800 residents, but don't let its size fool you. You'll find a charming, historic downtown area, and you can learn about the homes placed on the National Historic Places Registry with markers throughout town. You'll also love eating in Frederica - whether you're on the water at JP's on the Wharf or eating the best pizza in the state at Frederica Pizza & Pasta.
Fall is such a lovely season, and there's just something about the way Dover shines in orange and amber hues. Whether you want to walk around on the green and appreicate the foliage or enjoy a cool day at Silver Lake Park, you'll have a great time on a fall day trip to Dover.
Must Do: Walk Loockerman Street and enjoy the gradient of colors on the trees!
Milton is the best foodie town in Delaware, hands down. Not only do you have local joints like The Backyard drawing crowds every night, but there's a lively main street where you can walk off your giant meal! That's a win-win. You'll also find Dogfish Head Brewery, which is the pride and joy of the diamond state, and offers one of the top tours in the United States.
Must Do: Tour Dogfish Head - even if you're not a beer drinker.
Georgetown is a super cool town that was built around a circle and thrives on its agriculutral industry. You'll find a little bit of everything, from luxury hotels and gourmet restaurants to one of the best bagel shops in the state. Plan your trip around one of the festivals on the circle for a true Delaware experience!
Must Do: Visit Wilson's General Store for the best scrapple sandwich on earth.
So, there you have it – your small towns in Delaware bucket list for this year! Don’t waste any time, get right on it and enjoy the most charming experiences of your life.
