Slower Lower Delaware is a mish-mosh of farms and towns, and we’re lucky to have such easy access to fresh produce! If you’re looking to support a local farm and get involved in a CSA, you’ll want to hear about the tiny Hook Family Farm.
When Randy and Sheena Vanderhook moved onto their one-acre micro farm in 2007, they had no idea what the next decade would bring!
Just a few years ago (in 2018), they ramped up their farm's production and began offering a Community-Supported Agriculture program, or CSA. With a CSA, neighbors purchase shares of produce and products, and get a box every week. Two years later, they began to offer other local goods, like meat, mushrooms, coffee, and even ice cream - all from local farms.
The farm grows a huge variety of produce, including delicious greens like swiss chard, kale, arugula, and spinach, along with root vegetables like beets, turnips, and carrots, and a whole lot more. If you're ever looking for local okra, eggplant, peppers, or asparagus - you're in luck!
There's a Monarch Butterfly Waystation on the property, too, offering a welcome reprieve for pollinators. They also grow more herbs than you can even imagine!
The cut flower garden is expanding every year, and beautiful bouquets will soon be a part of their offerings as well as fresh produce, eggs, and homemade apothecary offerings.
