The best part of any beach day in Delaware is, by far, the food! Sure, we love the ocean and the sand and all that… but let’s be honest, the reason we deal with the crowds is to stuff our faces with saltwater taffy, Gus and Gus fried chicken, and the best fries on the planet from none other than Thrashers French Fries. It doesn’t have to be summertime for you to get your fill of these crispy and salty fries, though – there is one location near the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk that is open year-round.
For almost a century, Delawareans have been flocking to the boardwalk for buckets of fries. Thrashers first opened in 1929!
Thrashers has three locations in Rehoboth Beach, though the original is in Ocean City, Maryland. We like to think that the Delaware locations make them better, though... and they're always piping hot.
Well, first of all, only the finest Idaho potatoes make the cut to be cut! Thrashers fries are hand-cut and anything that doesn't meet their strict standards for quality is tossed. Then, they're deep fried in peanut oil, dusted with salt and vinegar, and served up hot and fresh.
Wait - vinegar? Yup, that's what makes these fries really stand out. You won't find ketchup offered, and if you ask for it, you'll get some pretty strange looks from those in the know. Thrashers fries, and really all fries, are best served with malt vinegar.
Next time you find yourself craving crispy, salty, and steaming hot fries, make the trip down to the boardwalk and pick up a bucket from Thrasher's French Fries -- any time of year!
