Soon enough, spring flowers will be in bloom and the warm weather will send Delawareans looking for their first beach trip of the summer. Instead of heading down to the popular towns along the southern shore, why not visit one of Delaware’s bay towns, like the charming fishing town of Bowers Beach?
Bowers Beach is a small town right on the Delaware Bay, and it might be the most underrated town in Delaware.
Most mornings, working schooners and ships sail out of Bowers on their way to collect oysters, crabs, fish and more from the bay.
The historic oyster schooner Maggie S. Myers creates an unmistakable silhouette when it is out at sea.
Another local boat, the L.B. Travis, is a Delaware Bay landmark and helps supply oysters and seafood to local eateries.
The town has a long history of Oyster harvesting - dating back to Big Thursday in 1852.
Prior to August 10, 1852, there was an Oyster Harvest ban. Once it was lifted, the town celebrated, big time! For decades, there was an annual celebration on the third Thursday of each month. Now, the Bowers Beach Maritime Museum celebrates this event on a Sunday, so many Delawareans can come down to have a good time!
If you've never been fishing in the bay, the kind watermen out of Bowers Beach will take you on a chartered expedition!
It's a one of a kind experience, and you'll love fishing with the pros. Check out the tours offered from
Capitan's Lady Charters to plan your day trip of a lifetime.
Each year, the Bowers Beach Maritime Museum hosts their Buccaneer Bash, when the pirate history of the town is put on display!
A parade, costume contests, reenactments and local vendors are the hallmarks of one of the best festivals in the state.
While you're here, stop by one of the town's restaurants, like the Bayview Tavern.
You'll find amazing wings and a great beer list at this local favorite that's oftentimes right on the water.
JP's Wharf is another great waterfront spot where you'll find oysters, straight out of the bay!
There's no better way to cap off a day in Bowers Beach than a meal on the dock here, where you'll be able to watch the boats rolling in with their daily catch.
Of course, you don't need a reason to visit this lovely town - it's the perfect place to enjoy a day by the bay, taking in the sights and sounds of a vibrant, old-fashioned fishing town!
