The small town of Newark in Delaware has an organization dedicated to the preservation, education, and celebration of German history and culture. The Delaware Saengerbund and Library Association provides a vast array of German historical information including the accomplishments, efforts, and participation of Americans of German Ancestry who helped make America into an international leader. They also throw an amazing three-day-long Oktoberfest in true Munich style that you’ll want to add to your bucket list!
The next Oktoberfest is scheduled for September 15th – 17th, 2023.
Oktoberfest kicks off with a parade! The Münchner Kindl, or Munich Child, is carried as a symbol of the German city of Munich.
Several times during Oktoberfest, the Enzian Volkstanzgruppe performs traditional Bavarian dances. Men wear Lederhosen and women wear Dirndl as they dance the Tracht.
Everyone loves the grilled bratwurst! There's also Weisswurst, potato pancakes, barbecued chicken, Bavarian pretzels, sauerkraut, potato salad, and "Rollmops" which is marinated herring on rye bread. Desserts include varieties of Torten and traditional plum cake.
Make sure to come back to Newark during Christmas, when Main Street is as festive as can be! If you’ve ever been to Newark, Delaware, tell us your favorite things about it in the comments!
