Delaware is kind of a strange state, but that’s why we love it! While most of the country has no idea what goes on in the First State, we know that our “short stretch of I-95” is so much more than it appears. Read a few reasons that Delaware, and Delawareans, are America’s black sheep.
1. We love our beaches... as long as it's not summertime.
Delawareans love spending time on the beach, but really only from September to May. After the tourists start flooding the towns, we high tail it out of there.
2. We'll eat anything, as long as you call it scrapple.
People here fall into one of two camps: either you know what's in scrapple and eat it anyway, or you've learned not to question what people serve you.
3. We can't stand the tourists, but they really do keep us afloat.
Delaware has incredibly low taxes and no sales tax, thanks partially to the revenue brought in by tourists. Over one million people head to Rehoboth Beach every summer, and when your state has a population that's below that, you start to realize the difference all that revenue makes.
4. We are known around the world for having the best slimy seafood.
Delaware Bay oysters are among the best in the world! Of course, we can't be known for luxurious lobsters, like Maine, or grumpy, pinchy crabs, like Maryland... but we'll take what we can get.
5. We're fiercely protective of our boring state.
Only Delawareans can complain about Delaware. When we travel, we sing our state's praises to anyone who will listen.
6. There are more corporations than people living in Delaware.
Entrepreneurs take advantage of Delaware's lax regulations and tax incentives, and incorporate here. There are well over a million corporations registered in this state, which is hilarious because there aren't even a million people living here.
7. Oh, and there are more chickens than corporations.
While there isn't really any official chicken census, it's safe to say that there are several million chickens living in this state. Most of them will meet a fate in the food industry, but thousands of others are pets and layers for Delaware families and farms.
8. We'll talk trash on Philadelphia all day... but we live and die by the Eagles.
We get it, Philly! Nobody likes you, and you don't care. But the only reason we stay loyal is that the Eagles are our only option! Sure, there are Ravens fans around, but they are few and far between.
9. We love our off-centered establishments.
From the Oddporium in Arden to the famous Dogfish Head and its Steampunk Treehouse, there are strange things worth finding in every corner of the First State.
10. Most of our state was built by one family.
Okay, "most" might be an exaggeration, but only slightly. One of our main roads is the Dupont Highway, many of our most famous buildings are DuPont structures, and there are stunning DuPont estates all over New Castle County. It's just part of life here.
11. Delawareans can name more birds than an Audubon Society Field Guide
We grew up spotting birds along the river and marshes, so we can point out even the rarest beauties from a distance. It's a weird Delaware habit that sticks with us forever.
12. For as small as we are, Delaware is a very divided state.
Does slower lower start at the canal? Do the "Lower Slower" people just want a bumper sticker that says "LSD?" Discuss!
