Right along the Lewes canal is a piece of American history, waiting to be discovered. If you’ve ever walked past the large red ship bobbing along in the water, it’s time to take a few minutes and learn exactly this incredible boat’s story.

The landmark Lightship Overfalls was the last lightvessel constructed for the United States Lighthouse Service, before it became the United States Coast Guard in 1939.

She was built in 1938 and served in Connecticut and Massachusetts until she was damaged in a storm and decommissioned in 1972. Now, she remains one of only 17 surviving ships, and one of only a few that's open for public tours.
For years, Delawareans have enjoyed the sight of the beautiful red Lightship Overfalls along the canal in Lewes.

This winter, the ship sailed to New Jersey for a few months of restoration and maintenance, but as of April 26th, she's back at port.

The ship's re-opening party will be Memorial Day weekend, and everyone in Delaware is invited.

The party is the ship's 80th Birthday celebration! During this dinner and celebration of the ship's history, there will be live music, entertainment, family activities and of course, plenty of delicious food. It's being held on May 25, from 6 p.m to 9 p.m. The party will support the Overfalls Foundation and mission to preserve the ship. Tickets cost just $50.
Once the ship is open for the season, tours are offered of the ship's upper and lower decks, and a former wheelhouse converted into a museum.

The ship is open 6 days a week (closed Wednesdays) from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tours cost just $5 for adults, and they're free for children under 14 years of age.
