When it comes to charm and history, it’s hard to top the town of Lewes. Nicknamed the “First Town in the First State”, just about every bit of Delaware history can be traced back to the town and the Cape Henlopen Area. If you want to take a peek at some of the hidden history of the Delaware coast, visit the Maritime Museum at the historic Cannonball House.
The Cannonball House is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Lewes, Delaware.
It's now home to the Lewes Historical Society, which hosts all sorts of events and is even home to an impressive maritime museum.
Just about everyone knows that this home dates back to Colonial times, and that it was the recipient of a British attack during the War of 1812. That's when the eponymous cannonball came into the picture, and it's still lodged in the wall to this day.
Inside the house itself, the Lewes Historical Society has worked tirelessly to put together a collection of artifacts and artwork that tell the comprehensive tale of the Delaware Coast. There are hundreds of artifacts on display!
Outside, on the grounds, you'll find replica and original items that showcase the history of Delaware's coast, from war to peace, and with a focus on the sailing and lifesaving missions around Cape Henlopen.
