Tucked away in Ocean View, Delaware, the James Farm Ecological Preserve is a secluded natural area open to the public. There you’ll find the James Farm Ecological Preserve Loop Trail, which features plenty of natural beauty. But the highlight of the trail is the hidden beach, where you can enjoy stunning views looking out across Indian River Bay.

The James Farm Ecological Preserve was donated to Sussex County in 1992 by Mary Lighthipe, a descendant of the James family.

Featuring 150 acres and over three miles of trails, the preserve provides a home for a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, horseshoe crabs, ospreys, and Eastern box turtles. The full James Farm Ecological Preserve Loop Trail is about 1.6 miles long and will take you through seven different habitats, from maritime forest to salt marshes.
Step into the peaceful shade of the forest, listening for birdsong as you go. There are three observation platforms along the trails, so be sure to pause and take in the scenery.

As you continue toward the beach, you’ll walk along a raised boardwalk over the salt marsh. Keep an eye out for ospreys and other native birds.
