It doesn’t have to be autumn in Delaware to take a scenic drive. But fall in Delaware is a spectacular time to see and smell the leaves changing. Fortunately there are several “country” roads that have some fabulous detours and historical stops along the way to spice up the trip and afford the chance to get out and stretch your legs. Here are some fabulous fall drives in Delaware. Enjoy!
1. BAYSHORE BYWAY The Bayshore byway, a.k.a. Route 9 Coastal Heritage Byway, is a beautiful drive in the fall.
There's much to see and do along the way, including stopping at the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge and making a stop in New Castle. Location and distance: From Dover Air Force Base to New Castle; 50 miles
2. BRANDYWINE VALLEY NATIONAL SCENIC BYWAY Enjoy twelve miles of sheer autumn bliss on this perfect road for a fall drive.
For an even more up close and personal "brush with nature," visit Brandywine Creek State Park. Get out and smell the flavors of autumn.Location and distance: From Wilmington to Centerville and from Wilmington to Montchanin; 12.25 miles
3. LEWES BYWAY A perfect short fall drive, this scenic road hits many Delaware historical highlights.
Combine a beautiful drive with a bit of history. Be sure to stop in at Cape Henlopen State Park for a trek through the sand, and also make sure to visit the charming Lewes Historic District.Location and distance: Lewes; 12.25 miles
4. HARRIET TUBMAN UNDERGROUND RAILROAD BYWAY Take an afternoon and meander through this scenic Delaware beauty.
Stretching 95 miles through Delaware, this gorgeous drive hits some pretty big highlights. Venture out of the car to take in the Odessa Historic District, the the Quaker Hill Historic District in Wilmington. 5. NANTICOKE HERITAGE BYWAY Hop on this byway just north of Seaford on Delaware 13.
