Delaware doesn’t even come close to major metropolitan areas that offer a huge diversity of cuisines from around the world. But, yes, ethnic restaurants exist here. Most of the time you just have to look a little further and dig a little deeper to find the great places to dine. Here are some fan favorites sure to blow your mind.
1. Ramen Kumamto, Newark
Japanese: Relatively new to Newark, this place is popular with international students who attend the University of Delaware. Select from a vareity of authentic ramen noodle bowls (I love the pork bone broth) or a selection of other Japanese dishes. I am a HUGE fan of their pork buns.
2. Ole Tapas Lounge, Newark
Spanish: Select from a huge number of 'small plates' or tapas to share with your dining party or plan ahead for authentic paella. On certain nights enjoy flamenco dancers!
3. Opa! Opa!, Wilmington
Greek: Delaware has had several Greek restaurants come and go, but we hope this one is here to stay.
4. Pochi Restaurant, Wilmington
Chilean: Pochi is consistently rated as one of Delaware's best restaurants, which is saying a lot, considering the food is traditional Chilean cuisine. Also a wine bar, the menu is loaded with seafood dishes, including house made ceviche, as well as empanadas.
5. Tasti Thai, New Castle
Thai: I swear this place has the best green curry in Delaware. The menu here is huge. Try the Thai favorite--papaya salad--or mango sticky rice too.
6. Nhu Vu, Middletown
Vietnamese: I was so disappointed when Saigon Vietnamese restaurant closed in Newark, but luckily there's another option, slightly more south. Their pho is full of flavor and they have a huge selection of vermicelli bowls.
7. Olive Tree Cafe, Newark
Mediterranean: Olive Tree features ethnic menu options reflecting the cuisines of Morocco, Spain, France, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon and more. Diners rave about the falafel and kebab platters.
8. Mariachi Restaurant, Rehoboth Beach
Mexican: We recently featured an entire post about great Mexican restaurants in Delaware, but we couldn't do this list without featuring one of our favorites.
9. Yukon Korean Barbeque, Dover
Korean: Many locals who frequent Yukon come here for some of the best sushi in Dover, but if you haven't had Korean food, try one of their dishes like the Bi Bim Bap or bulgogi.
10. Pinang, Newark
Malaysian: Pinang has a huge menu and features other Asian cuisines, but this is the best place in Delaware for traditional Malaysian dishes, including the national dish, Nasilemak, a rice dish cooked in coconut milk.
11. Juliana's Kitchen, Wilmington
Peruvian: Here's another highly rated ethnic spot that Yelp-ers love. Juliana and her husband own and operate the restaurant, and pay homage to their Peruvian roots with dishes like ceviche, tamales, and arroz con pollo. MSN recently featured it as one of the top restaurants in the U.S.!
12. Flavor of India, Dover
Indian: This is one of those places you pull up to and think, "Are you sure this is where we want to eat?" Located basically in an old section of a hotel lobby, this place is a hidden gem. I recently saw a post on Instagram from popular downstate Delaware chef Hari Cameron who was dining here. There's a lunch buffet daily so you can try all sorts of dishes.
13. Ali Baba, Newark
Middle Eastern: I used to love going to Casablanca Restaurant in Wilmington for a full Moroccan meal in a setting that transported you to the Middle East, complete with low sofas and belly dancers. It's now closed, but you can still find the same dishes at its smaller sister restaurant in Newark. I love the spicy chicken and bastilla.
14. The Crownery Chinese Restaurant, Hockessin
Chinese: Delaware has so many strip-mall Chinese take out places and while many are good, few are as authentic or as fresh as the Crownery.
15. Cultured Pearl, Rehoboth Beach
Japanese/Sushi: Nothing tops the Cultured Pearl for sushi in Delaware. While the other dishes are really more Asian-fusion than truly Japanese, the sushi and sashimi is the best.
16. Sheridan's Irish Pub, Smyrna
Irish: Joe and Shirley Sheridan opened this pub in Smyrna after opening their popular Taste of Ireland pub in Newark. While the Newark location is now closed, the Irish duo is dishing up classics like boxtys, shepherd's pie, beef and Guinness stew, and others at this pub in Kent County.
17. Mrs. Robino's, Wilmington
Italian: Delaware has many really good Italian restaurants spattered all over the state. But we love the classic Italian ambiance and flavors of Mrs. Robino's in Little Italy. It's everything you expect it to be and more.
18. Bon Appetite, Seaford
French: Yes, French food in Seaford. A friend of mine who grew up there swears that the food is delicious. I need to put this on my list to try for myself.
