Delaware is so full of adventure! We’ve got beaches, forests, lakes and rivers – and even in our biggest cities, there are a ton of outdoorsy things to do. We’ve rounded up eight of the coolest outdoorsy things to do in Delaware this summer, so check it out and plan your next summer adventure. These are things that anyone can do, even if you’re way more comfortable inside! Try out some of these great adventures to break out of your comfort zone. If you’re an experienced outdoor adventurer, you may be surprised to learn these great trips are so close by.
Prime Hook (above) is a wonderful and easy paddle that is great for beginners to Kayaking or canoeing. Further north, you can drop in the Brandywine Creek in Wilmington after a good rain and enjoy the flowing river - it's a totally new way to see the city! Launch from the beach and paddle down the Delaware Bay to the Point, or rent a Kayak and enjoy tranquil waters at Trap Pond State Park, Killens Pond State Park, or Lums Pond State Park. Pack a lunch and stop halfway through your trip for a bite to eat and enjoy all of the great birding and wildlife spotting in our beautiful state parks.
Alapocas Run State Park is a great place to go rock climbing in the middle of Wilmington! You'll have to get a permit from the park office, and should really go with someone who's gone climbing before. The permit is free. If you're looking for a climbing lesson, you can check out the Delaware Rock Gym in Bear, to get comfortable before heading out.
We've featured Lum's Pond's incredible Go Ape adventure in previous articles, but we've got to mention it again. Tiptoe through the treetops and zip-line over the beautiful pond as you climb higher and higher in this incredible adventure.
Trap Pond is one of two Delaware State Parks that offers cabins for camping, which is great if you're new to outdoorsy adventure, or would like a little more comfort. Trap Pond and Lum's Pond also offer yurts, which are permanent tent sites with decks and a little more structure than a traditional tent. Both cabins and yurts are great for newer campers.
Fenwick Island and Indian River Inlet are favorite spots for experienced surfers, while Rehoboth and Bethany Beach offer surfing lessons to those looking to take to the water on a board for the first time. They'll get you on your feet and onto a wave - and it's a feeling like no other in the world! I'll warn you, though - once you start surfing, it's absolutely addicting, and you'll never want to stop.
The New Castle 100 Archers club offers public drop in lessons, or full classes. Archery is fun for the whole family and is a great adventure! The NC 100 Archers club is made up of super friendly instructors that will walk you through your set up, equipment and very first shots. You'll be hitting bullseyes in no time!
Stand up paddleboarding is the latest and greatest in Ocean and River adventures. Delmarva Board Sports offers affordable gear rental and instruction, and they host excursions all over the state. Indian River Inlet is a favorite, as is paddling down Broad Creek in Laurel.
Explore Fort Miles in Lewes on a beautiful summer day. The abandoned batteries, tall look-out points, and historic guns are fascinating, and a great way to learn your Delaware history in the outdoors, rather than in a museum.
So, next time you’ve got a free afternoon and want to get some fresh air, try any of those outdoorsy things to do in Delaware. There’s so much adventure waiting for you in our wonderful state.
