Over time, this became a massive event, with the winners paraded around The Circle in horse-drawn carriages, and to symbolize setting aside their differences, politicians would bury an actual hatchet in a tub of sand. After the ceremony, an ox feast would follow!

Today, even though the internet has more or less eliminated the need for such an event, Return Day is held in much the same way as it was in the past.

Politicians arrive in horse-drawn carriages or antique cars, and together, the Democratic and Republican parties bury a hatchet in sand from Lewes. The town crier still reads out the election results, and there are festivities, including a concert and, yes, an ox roast.
