I often write about Delaware’s natural wonders, from the dunes at Cape Henlopen to the churning Indian River Inlet, and the rolling hills of the Brandywine Valley. But, with Delaware’s history of industry and maritime importance, it’s not a surprise to learn that there are so many enchanting, incredible man-made Delaware wonders, too. Check out some of the best places to observe man-made beauty in the great state of Delaware.
1. Winterthur Estate
With fields of lavender and a children's enchanted garden, Winterthur is the most magical place in Delaware. Events happen here from spring through winter, and nobody ever leaves the property without a big smile on their face. Enjoy this incredible DuPont Mansion when you visit - it feels like you're getting whisked away to a whole new world!
2. The Indian River Lifesaving Station & Museum
Imagine a time when mariners did not have technology and impressive boats, but they still set themselves into the raging waters to help stranded or distressed mariners. This monument to their bravery and successes takes my breath away every time.
3. The Ashland Covered Bridge
There aren't many covered bridges left in the world, but the Ashland Covered Bridge still stands after decades of use. The bright red seems to illuminate the landmark over Red Clay Creek.
4. Nemours
Not only is the Nemours Mansion a stunning display of architecture, but the world-leading Children's Hospital on its grounds is an amazing example of the DuPont philanthropic legacy in Delaware.
5. Bancroft Mills
Please note, Bancroft Mills has permanently closed.
Bancroft Mills was once a thriving paper product giant, and now it's been reduced to the hollow shell of a burnt out building. It stands impressive above the water, and mesmerizes anyone that begins to look for all of the detail.
6. The Delaware Memorial Bridge
The Delaware Memorial Bridge is an architectural wonder that connects our great state to, well, New Jersey. The two spans combine for a total of 22,000 feet of roadway, and it took years to build. Now, it's one of the most iconic symbols of Delaware.
7. The Chesapeake & Delaware Canal Bridges
The yellow Roth bridge is one of my favorite spans in the country, as its bright color really stands out! The parallel St. Georges bridge completes the picture of these two bridges that connect upstate and Slower Lower.
8. The Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk
From Dolles, to the hotels, the Bandstand and the stunning replenished dunes, the entirety of the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk is a manmade Delaware wonder.
9. The Lightship Overfalls
The Lightship Overfalls is another testament to Delaware's maritime history! Did you know that this Lewes Canalfront landmark is one of only 17 lightships that remain, from the original 179 that were built? The project lasted from 1820-1952 as a way to guide mariners to safety on the rocky United States coasts.
10. Miles (the Monster)
Miles the Monster is everyone's favorite Delaware monster! This 46 foot tall beast stands at the entrance of Dover Speedway, crushing cars in his boulder hands and staring down everybody with his glowing green eyes. He is an impressive statue, for certain!
11. The World War II Fire Control Towers
These World War II towers were built to keep watch for artillery fire and offshore threats during World War II. Luckily, they were never needed. Now, they dot Delaware's coast, and one is even available for climbing in Cape Henlopen State Park.
