I look forward to the summer each year because the state feels like it comes alive. There is always something to do, somewhere to go, or something to eat that feels like summer. Here are just a few activities to add to your Delaware Summer Bucket List.
1. Visit the Delaware State Fair
Where else can you pet a baby goat, see a tractor pull and eat a donut burger?
2. Shop at a Farmers Market
Stock up on fresh fruits, veggies and local honey at one of our many farmers markets!
3. Attend one (or all) of Wilmington’s many festivals
Wilmington LOVES its festivals. If you’ve never had a panzerotti, be sure to devour one at St. Anthony’s Italian Festival. There’s also the Greek festival, Chinese festival and Wilmington Flower Market to name a few.
4. Go to the beach
It’s a summer rite of passage to set up your umbrella, beach blanket or tent and camp out for the day. Get there early in the morning to avoid traffic and get a good spot.
5. Chow down on boardwalk fries
Go for the bucket. You’re worth it.
6. Rock out at the Firefly Music Festival (or avoid Rt. 1 like the plague)
Let’s face it. You’re either going to Firefly or know someone going.
7. Make it a Sundae Funday
You can’t make it through summer without going out for ice cream at least once! It’s worth the wait for a legen-dairy treat from Woodside Farm Creamery or Hopkins Farm Creamery. Both are consistently rated among the best in our state.
8. Catch an outdoor movie
Take in a family-friendly film under the stars on Mondays in Dewey Beach.
9. Root for the home team a Blue Rocks game
The wacky theme nights and Cowboy Monkey Rodeo make this an annual tradition. Plus, it’s not really summer until you’ve seen the dancing celery.
10. Watch the sunrise (or sunset)
There’s nothing more peaceful than taking in the light as the day begins or ends. The horizon seems to really come alive in the summer.
11. Chill out at a Delaware State Park Concert
Tap your feet to the beat of a local band. Six of our state parks participate in a summer concert series.
12. Feel the sea breeze
Whether you take your kayak for a spin, scope the shore for seabirds, or cruise the Kalmar Nyckel, take a moment to appreciate the natural beauty our shorelines have to offer.
This list could easily include a dozen other activities. What’s on your Delaware summer bucket list this year?
