So many people think that living in Delaware is boring and that the only way to enjoy our state is to head to the coast. Of course, anyone who lives here knows that’s not true! If you want to get to know your home state, make these Delaware resolutions to turn 2020 into the best year ever.
1. Get to know our state's underrated wilderness
Delaware's parks, forests, and national wildlife preserves show off a part of the state that's truly magnificent. Make time for a few hikes, paddles or strolls this year to see for yourself.
2. Travel back in time for an unforgettable meal
Visit some of Delaware's historic restaurants like Cantwell's Tavern or the Counting House, or step back in time when you visit the Colonial-themed Jessop's in New Castle. Each place is a fun spot to get in touch with your Delaware roots.
3. Make time to stop and smell the azaleas
Philadelphia is the garden capital of the country, but it only gets that title because it is so close to Delaware. Our DuPont estates offer up some of the world's most beautiful gardens. Visit Winterthur around Mothers' Day for a walk through their Azalea Woods that will impress anyone who loves a bright and flowery landscape.
4. Spend some time on the Bay
While everyone flocks to the coast during the summertime, our bayshore beach towns get overlooked. Visit Bowers Beach, Pickering Beach, Woodland Beach, or any of these quieter shorelines for an experience that's one of a kind.
5. Revisit your childhood favorites
The Bayshore beaches are a great way to avoid the crowds, but at least once during the summer, head to Rehoboth Beach and stroll the boardwalk. You'll want to pick up fried chicken from Gus & Gus, fries from Thrashers, candy from Ibach's and Fisher's popcorn.
6. Get in touch with our remarkable history
Delaware was the first state to join the Union, one of the first settled by Europeans, and was home to indigenous people for thousands of years before that. There's so much history here that's worth checking out! Visit the Nanticoke Heritage Museum, the Kalmar Nyckel, and historic towns like Odessa and New Castle to see for yourself.
7. Support family-owned farms and agriculture
Agriculture is one of Delaware's most important industries. Make it a point to support local farms and orchards this year by visiting farm stands, farmers markets, and open houses.
8. Take the scenic route
Delaware is home to several scenic byways that show off our state's natural beauty. Drive around the Red Clay Creek Valley, down Route 9, along the Nanticoke Scenic Byway, or just hit the road and get off the highways. You'll always be impressed with what you see.
9. Celebrate the State Fair with rides, games, and the tastiest carnival food of the year
Get to the State Fair this summer, and live it up! You'll feel like a kid again when you play carnival games and snack on cotton candy. If you're not one for rides, take your kids or grandkids and watch their faces light up with excitement. Fair Week should be a state holiday celebrated by all.
