Delaware natives are a rare breed – we grew up in the First State, and we’ve decided to stay close to home. That shouldn’t surprise anyone, though – if you’ve spent enough time in Delaware, you know it’s a lovely place to be. That being said, there are a few things that will give away a Delaware native at any time – how many of these are true to you?
1. Sales tax shocks you.
We don't pay sales tax in Delaware, so shopping in other states is always a bit of a shock. We'd rather just see the price up front - it really makes shopping easier.
2. You KNOW the Bobbie is better than the Gobbler
Yes, we love Wawa, but there's only one Thanksgiving sandwich. The Bobbie is just about the best sub on earth, and while the Gobbler will do in a pinch, there's nothing like the original.
3. You can get anywhere without hitting traffic
Delaware natives know all of the back roads to their favorite destinations. There are only a few spots in the state where you absolutely must travel on the busy highways - most country roads will take you where you need to be.
4. And you certainly can get to the beaches without paying a toll.
Sometimes it's better to pay the toll and take the quickest way to the beach, but if you've got time for a scenic drive, you'll see a lot more on the winding coastal roads.
5. Chances are, you were in the paper when you were a kid.
Most of us have been featured in our local paper at some point, whether it was with our FFA group, 4-H, or for some accomplishment on the ball field. And for that week, we were each celebrities.
6. You spent Senior Week at Dewey Beach.
There's no better place to party! Even though, you know, we were in high school and couldn't really do too much other than shop, eat, and sleep on the sand.
7. You still miss Kahunaville.
Long before it was a children's playground, Kahunaville on the Wilmington Waterfront was the best adult playground in the state. Live music, fun drinks, and all-night parties made this the place to be when you went out with your friends.
8. You'll defend El Diablo over Chipotle for life.
El Diablo's handmade burritos have taken northern Delaware by storm, and for good reason! You'll never want to step into a chain like Chipotle again when you taste these fresh, delicious burritos or burrito bowls. No wonder there's always a line.
9. You know how to spell "Rehoboth."
And it drives you crazy when people spell it "Rehobeth." Unfortunately, it's all too common to see people get the town's name wrong.
10. You knew a snow day meant your rural street wouldn't be cleared all day.
Even small amounts of snow led to snow days when we were in school, because the plows never quite make it to the boonies. We usually had to wait for a neighbor to clear the roads before we could trek to our favorite sledding hill.
11. You've had to explain where Delaware is to about a million people.
Yes, it's a state. No, the "Dela-WHERE?!" joke is NOT funny.
12. You understand that Wawa is as close to perfect as one store can be.
Great coffee, perfect hoagies, the best snack selection, cheap gas... is there anything else you could ask from a convenience store?
13. It really bothers you when someone calls it "UDel."
Even the mascot is called "YouDee," but people still insist on calling it UDel. Delaware natives know that our biggest college is simply UD.
And while we tend to be peaceful people, there are a few things that anyone can do that will really get to us. Check out 15 Sure-Fire Ways To Make A Delawarean Mad and keep them in mind the next time you visit!
