Delaware is home to some of the coolest bridges in the United States, even if that’s not the first thing to come to mind when you think of our little state. There are beautiful historic bridges mixed in with traditional steel bridges, and two beautiful cable-stayed bridges that really round out the state’s water crossings. Which bridge do you cross the most? Which one is your favorite?
The big blue beauty that amazes beachgoers, tourists and locals alike. There's really no other bridge in the area that can take your breath away quite like the Indian River Inlet bridge can, particularly when it's lit up, at night.
Covered Bridges always look so quaint and fitting against a country backdrop, and this beautiful Wooddale Bridge over Red Clay Creek is no exception. It was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1973.
St. George's Bridge reminds me a lot of the average Delawarean. I know that sounds corny, but think about it. This bridge that crosses the canal isn't the most spectacular feat of engineering, but it gets the job done well. It has heart - it's the everyday person's bridge. It's loved by everybody that gets to view the canal from between its steel supports.
The ultra-cool Summit Bridge stands out because it's part of the Delaware Bicycle Byway - so you can ride across it. It's quite the experience, and a little nervewracking!
The Market Street bridge just feels like home. Spanning the Brandywine in Wilmington, it's the perfect backdrop to the parks and scenery around the river.
The Ashland Covered Bridge is another great covered bridge in Delaware. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places along with the Wooddale bridge in 1973. If you haven't driven or walked across this bridge, you need to come explore it immediately.
The Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Bridge, or the Senator William Roth Bridge (or the Rt 1 Bridge, depending on who you ask) is my favorite bridge in all of Delaware. The bright yellow supports always cheer me up, even when I'm dealing with dreaded Rt 1 traffic.
Of course, we can't forget the big one. Linking our state in New Jersey and the Philadelphia area, standing giant against the sky when you're traveling north.
If you haven’t seen the beautiful covered bridges or pedaled across the Summit Bridge, you need to add them to your summer bucket list! With all of the canals and rivers throughout Delaware, we get to experience bridges that the inland parts of the country just get to dream about.
