For many Delawareans, Route 9 is considered the most scenic road in the First State. It IS hard to beat – beginning in historic New Castle, winding through the salt marshes of the bay and finally finishing near the historic Dickinson Plantation means you’ll catch some of the best views and sites in Delaware. However, there are a few other, lesser known Delaware drives that are worth taking before the last weeks of the season turn fall into winter.
Route 54 / Lighthouse Road will take you past acres of Delaware Farmland and Marshland until it lands you right at the ocean. You couldn't ask for a better view, and a better destination.
Driving through downtown Dover will show you historic homes, cobblestone streets, and the beautiful colors of fall. Head down here soon, before the leaves are all gone.
The scenic, 22 mile drive through Prime Hook NWR is a great way to spend two to four hours looking for wildlidfe, spotting rare birds, and taking in the sights. You don't even have to get out of your car to catch some pretty incredible scenery.
Old Mill Bridge Rd winds through rural Delaware farmland and crosses Dirickson Creek before landing at the aforementioned Lighthouse Road. Right before you get to the end, though, you'll find one of the only places in southern Delaware that actually makes a good Cheesesteak. Consider that a bonus!
Stop at 13 different viewpoints to take in the true beauty of Delaware's largest wildlife refuge and one of the most important spots for migratory birds on the planet.
The Red Clay Creek Scenic Byway will take you through Barley Mill Rd's own Ashland Covered Bridge. The Red Clay Creek Valley is one of the prettiest spots in Delaware, year round.
Grab some snacks and a road trip buddy and hit up a few of these gorgeous drives in a weekend! The Wildlife Refuge Auto Tours are the best to do before winter comes, but really, each of these underrated Delaware drives is worth taking all year long.
