Winter has been too long this year – I’m ready for beach weather. Unfortunately, it’s going to be a long time before any of us are laying out on the sand, tanning, and splashing in the waves! If you’re looking for a great hike to welcome spring and immerse yourself in the salt air that Delawareans crave, head to Cape Henlopen State Park for some beachy hiking and the best view in Delaware.
The "Bike Trail" in Cape Henlopen State Park is a bit of a misnomer - the three mile loop trail takes you by the park office, nature center, campground, and Fort Miles Historic Area.
As you walk this paved path, you'll enjoy the sounds and smells of the ocean and salt air, and you'll soon stumble upon the park's only Observation Tower that's open for public use.
Read a bit about the history of these fire control towers - used to keep an eye out for German U-Boats off the coast of Delaware - before you start your climb.
From the top of the tower, you can watch boats roll in, observe fishermen heading out for the day, spot rare birds and wildlife, and really begin to appreciate the wonders that surround you in the great state of Delaware.
Cape Henlopen State Park is located at 5099 Cape Henlopen Dr. in Lewes, Delaware, and is open every day from 8 AM - Sunset. The Bike Loop Trail is three miles of paved walkway, though some side trails are sandy.
Have you climbed to the top of the observation tower? What did you spot from way up high? Tell us in the comments below!
