There is no shortage of places to grab a great sandwich in Delaware. You can’t drive ten miles without hitting a Capriotti’s, a Casapulla’s, an Arena’s Deli, a Jimmy John’s, a Jersey Mikes, or a Wawa where you an pick up a sandwich.
And granted, those are all great options, but we went looking for something different. Whether you’re a true Delawarean craving a sub, a northern import trying to find a hoagie, a foodie looking for something a little unique, or a regular guy or gal looking for just a good simple sandwich on fresh bread, here are some of our favorites, listed in no particular order.
Don't let the word bagel in the name of this place fool you. Besides the amazing bagels with cream cheese, the bagel sandwiches are unbelievable. Many of the favorites are inspired by the college scene, as NBD is a favorite with University of Delaware students. Ask for your bagel 'scooped' if you don't want all that dough on your sandwich.
Ioannoni's is consistently rated one of the favorite non-chain sandwich places in Delaware. What makes this one different are the roasted meats, prepared daily for sandwiches. The pork supreme with roast pork, broccoli rabe and sharp provolone is amazing!
This little unassuming place on Main Street in Middletown has fantastic sandwiches. Since 2005 they've served up items on their Italian inspired menu. Try the Tony: fried breaded veal topped with broccoli rabe, prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers, and whole grain Dijon mustard.
Touch of Italy has several locations and each is slightly different. My favorite is the one on Second Street in Lewes where you can order sandwiches piled super high with the finest ingredients. I'm a fan of the Da Vinci: salami, sopressata, handmade mozzarella, sun dried red peppers, roasted red peppers, and, of course, extra virgin olive oil, all on a fresh sesame seed roll.
Surf Bagel is a favorite with locals and tourists alike, not just for the fresh bagels. This place makes a mean shrimp salad sandwich on a bagel, in a wrap or on a roll. I'm a huge fan of the Taylor Ham (aka pork roll) breakfast sandwich with cheese. Menu options all have a gnarly vibe!
This sandwich shop pays homage to our favorite four legged friends, with sandwiches all named after dog breeds. They opened the original store in Greenville back in 2001, proudly baking their own bread and making gourmet sandwiches. There are now four locations in Delaware and one just over the border in Pennsylvania. The Greyhound is shown here: prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, roasted red pepper, tomato, and basil pesto, on focaccia bread.
Patty is the talented cook behind this deli, and its newer sister shop in Lewes. We like the "Patty's Favorite" sandwich which has chicken, arugula, oven roasted tomatoes and fresh goat cheese, served on a soft roll or in a wrap.
Sure, the steaks are the bomb at Claymont Steak Shop, but their sandwiches and subs are equally tasty. This mouth watering menu option is roast beef on ciabatta bread.
9. Gaudiello's Italian Hoagies and Steaks, Wilmington
Gaudiello's is a little gem in the Trolley Square neighborhood. What it lacks in interior space, it makes up for with huge subs that are full of flavor. Reviewers rave about their classic Italian subs.
We like this little place at the beach! The photo of this rare roast beef sandwich seriously made my mouth water while I was writing about it! But reviewers really seem to like the Beachcomber grilled chicken steak sandwich with artichokes, grilled mushrooms, peppers, pizza cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato and mayo.
Since 1984, this little family run market has been serving up tasty sandwiches to locals. The shop is a grocery store / sandwich shop combo, and we heard they just combined with the ice cream shop next door.
While you're waiting on your to-go sandwich order, you can get an extra key made at this throw-back deli. Just off of Route 896 and a stone's throw from I-95, its worth a stop for a hot Reuben, or pastrami sandwich. I love their egg salad!
I end this list with a shout out to my favorite home-town sandwich place. Formerly known as Graham's Market, this family-owned and operated shop has been serving up massive subs, breakfast sandwiches and some of the most awesome home-cooked food for decades. Mr. Shaner, the husband half of the dynamic duo owners (Donnie & Cathy), sadly passed away this month. He had a HUGE heart and never met a stranger. You could count on a big hello if you saw him at the store or around town. ~With love to the entire Shaner Family~
